The Catch-22 of Organizational Change Management

Troubled and Failing Project

I hear this question repeatedly from people trying to implement an organizational change management (OCM) program. Putting one in place, however, is a change—one of the most difficult cultural transformations your company will undertake. As a result, people jump to the solution stage, which is well down the change management process path (which, they did not know, ironically, since there was no procedure in place). What’s difference between project management and change management?

Moira Alexander

Project management involves the use of people, processes and methodologies to plan, initiate, execute, monitor and close activities. Change management, similar to project management, involves people, processes, and tools to effectively help organizations manage all the changes that occur, whether as a result of project initiatives, or other factors that might impact the business. While project management and change management are two areas often work side-by-side -- and they should -- there are some similarities. Related Video.

Comparing Organizational Change Management Models

Troubled and Failing Project

A few weeks ago, I set out to write a post on the comparison of various organizational change management (OCM) methodologies and realized that would be a disservice to my readers. Hence, comparing methodologies like Kotter's model (the peel), Prosci's ADKAR (the core), and General Electric's Change Acceleration Process (the whole fruit) need a different approach. It would simply drag you down the path of implementation while failing to focus you on building the foundation. The pressure was too much and I have relented to numerous requests on making that comparison.

Are you missing a musketeer on your projects?

Kiron Bondale

Sponsors are funding our projects to realize expected business outcomes and these outcomes are achieved through successful change implementation and not just by completing project deliverables. Your core delivery team should be the Four Musketeers instead of the Three Amigos through the addition of a change lead. But aren’t we missing a vital role on most projects?

Who Approves Your Project Change Requests?

Project Risk Coach

Some organizations lack clarity about who approves the project change requests. On one project, the sponsor tells the project manager to make the decisions. And yet, in other cases, senior management gets involved. Your project may morph into a two-headed monster without an integrated change control process, resulting in adverse impacts to schedule, cost, and scope.
