My guest today is the dynamic Carl Pritchard.  Carl wrote the chapter dedicated in the PMBOK Guide 4th Edition dedicated to risk management. We can say he knows a thing or two on the subject.

Carl is the principal and founder of Pritchard Management Associates. As a lecturer he is considered a leading authority on risk and communications management and presents on a variety of management topics. He has published articles on project management language, advances in risk management, and on the challenges of training on the Internet. His work as an instructor has taken him around the world, training with some of the leading international training organizations, as well as for private clients.

As a widely recognized name in the world of Project Management, I was curious to know what his tips were to other project managers trying to stand out.  Here are some of the things we talked about:

  • What made Carl become known outside his place of employment?
  • What steps did he take to become a celebrity in the world of project management?
  • What are Carl’s best tips for staying organized and on top of our personal projects?
  • What’s the best way to network with people?

Plug of the Week

Human Factor FormulaToday’s plug is the great blog and website by Kevin Ciccotti, the Human Factor Formula.

Kevin blogs about the human factor in project management, and his posts are extremely insightful and helpful.

A lot of us project managers come from a technical background and some of the soft skills of dealing with actual people do not necessarily come easy to us.  It is great to get this very important aspect of our career right, and Kevin’s materials are a great tool in that regard.

Check out his website and let him know you heard of him here at the PM for the Masses podcast.

Thanks Kevin for the great content and the value you are adding to our profession!

Your Turn!

Carl Pritchard mentions during our conversation that one of his best tips for project managers is to not expect to get paid for everything.  Volunteering your time and knowledge in project management can be beneficial not only to those on the receiving end of the advice, but also to you.
