Agile 2018 wrap up

Zen Project Management

I'm on my way home after spending the week at Agile2018. It's been a great conference. I reconnected with old friends, met some new ones, and attended some great presentations. Monday's keynote was Dom Price (@domprice) from Atlassian. He shared how Atlassian tracked team health via their playbook. One interesting statistic he shared was that 78% of people don't trust their team mates. He also hit a theme that was repeated by many of the speaker; focus on outcomes, not outputs.

Agile: revolution to evolution

Musings on Project Management

20 odd years ago, Agile was a revolution in methodology and some say a revolution in business objectives, all set down in some now-well-known principles from the last '90s. We hope that by conducting effective ceremonies we will achieve the agile trinity of improved value delivery, better quality and more fun. Agile ceremonies should add value. If not, we are just adopting the form of agility with none of its substance.

Musings on Project Management

One of my Agile Project Management students asked me about stage gates and agile. My first response was this: Agile is not a gated methodology, primarily because scope is viewed as emergent, and thus the idea of pre-determined gate criteria is inconsistent with progressive elaboration and emergence. Agile does embrace structured releases; you could put a criteria around a release and use. agile
