Five Things You Should Know as an AI Leader

By Hassan Osman

For leaders at the forefront of AI integration, understanding the impact and potential of generative AI (gen AI) is not just helpful but essential for driving business growth and maintaining a competitive edge. This game-changing technology not only streamlines operations but also opens doors to unprecedented creative and strategic possibilities.

Here are five things you should know as an AI leader before you adopt solutions for your organization or team.

1. There is no playbook (yet)

In the world of gen AI, everyone is still trying to figure it out. The field is evolving, and there isn’t a comprehensive playbook that outlines the steps for effectively implementing generative AI – at least not just yet. Leaders and companies are navigating this new terrain in real time, learning, and adapting as they go.

2. Experiment!

A recurring theme among thought leaders in the AI space is experimentation. The key is to engage with AI tools and try out various approaches to discover what works and what doesn’t. A helpful strategy you can implement today is to spend 10 to 20 hours experimenting with different AI tools with your team. This will help you appreciate the potential and limits of generative AI.

3. AI technology advances quickly

AI technology is advancing at a breakneck pace. Diving into AI can feel overwhelming due to the sheer speed of its evolution. What you learn today might evolve or change by next week. So, if you feel overwhelmed, rest assured that you’re not alone.

4. AI will not solve everything

AI is not a universal solution. Many problems will not be solvable by AI, and in some cases, AI might even exacerbate them. So, keep in mind that some issues just don’t need AI-based solutions.

5. Be a responsible AI leader

Before implementing generative AI solutions in your organization, consider key issues such as copyright (e.g., who owns the output of generative AI tools), as well as the privacy, safety, and security of data and individuals. Consult with your organization’s legal, IT, and HR teams before taking any major steps with AI technologies. We’ll delve deeper into some of the risks that you should watch out for later, but it’s important to prioritize responsible leadership before you start.
