Review: How to prioritize your product portfolio when disruption happens (Planview)

This eBook starts by identifying the key characteristics of a disruption-ready organization and outlines four essential best practices for effective product portfolio prioritization amidst the backdrop of disruption.

Proactive product organizations need a portfolio management strategy with two key components:

  1. An organizational mindset that allows them to adapt effectively in the face of disruptions:
    • Organizational readiness
    • Resilience
  2. Suite of capability-driven best practices for effective reprioritization:
    • Continuous portfolio reviews using real-time, connected data.
    • Sharing highly visual scenario modeling and product portfolio roadmaps.
    • Application of lean and agile practices.
    • Technology investment to tie capabilities into a single source of truth and collaboration.

If I compare this with measures to become a more discovery-based portfolio management organization, I see several similarities and some missed opportunities to cope with disruption (see figure below from the book Agile Portfolio Management – The bridge to strategic agility)

Similarities:

  • Highly visual scenario modelling and roadmaps: Strategy changeability.
  • Continuous portfolio reviews using real-time, connected data: validation focus, decision-factors.
  • Application of lean and agile methodologies / accelerate innovation: execution mindset.
  • Learning and continuous improvement: improving portfolio management.

Missed opportunities:

  • Cycle-time/horizon: A faster heartbeat offers more opportunities to react.
  • Result orientation: Decline in delivered value could be a signal for possible disruption.
  • Decision making structure: business owners and POs are must closer to the external world and can bring potential disruption earlier to the portfolio table.
  • Execution flexibility: development process that offers more opportunities to react.
