If you are going to achieve excellence in big things, you develop the habits in little matters. Excellence is not an option, it is a prevailing attitude.” — Colin Powell

I was going through my daily medium feed when I stumbled upon this beautiful article on weekend habits. It talked about how a small experiment that involved time-tracking during the weekends helped the writer realize she had more time than she ever thought she had. And how she was able to use that time for doing things that she always wanted to do. The article inspired me to write about habits.

Why Are Habits Important For Success?

This question has been asked countless times, and everyone has a different answer every time. I’d like to put it like this — habits (good) are important because, unlike goals, they don’t lead to success or failure. They are a process that leads to improvement; it’s great if they lead to success. Even if they don’t, you have rewarded yourself with something positive that’s going to remain with you for the rest of your life.

Besides this, here are some important points that explain why it is important to build good habits to succeed in life:

  • Minimize Distractions

Distractions are our biggest enemy. They derail us from our path, and we remain stuck doing the things that don’t contribute anything to our life. On the other hand, habits help you remain focused on the bigger purposes in life, instead of getting stuck with distractions.

When your mind knows that it is supposed to function on one particular thing at a fixed time every day, it automatically finds ways to limit the distractions that prevent you from doing it.

  • Stimulate Your Brain

Human brain functions in a certain way. It responds to external stimuli and produces hormones that induce the body to react. Our habits work as those external stimuli that prompt the brain to release dopamines, which directly affect your productivity positively.

Developing a habit is like feeding your brain with that one source, which constantly sparks the feeling of a rewarding experience.

  • Help You Improve

Habits help you improve. When you are trying to develop a habit, you are putting that extra effort into doing something that you were not doing earlier. This is the first step towards improvement — getting out of your comfort zone.

New habits ensure that you don’t get too comfortable with one thing, and are constantly taking steps to improve.

Weekend Habits You Need To Build To Achieve Your Goals In Life

Achieve Your Goals In Life

This brings us to the main topic of this article i.e. weekend habits you need to establish to succeed in life.

Mentioned below are the top four weekend habits that will help you achieve the goals you have set in your life, and how they help. Let’s take a look at them one by one:

  • Know Your Time

‘If you have no control over your time, you have no control over your life.’

There are a number of things in life you can not have control over; time should not be one of those. One of the habits, therefore, that you must develop to achieve your goals is to stay in control of your time.

Practice by making a schedule for your weekends; don’t let them just pass by.

This is one critical habit that will help you in your weekly work as well. Since you will develop a habit of blocking time for everything on weekends, it will become easier for you to implement the same on your working days as well. And as we all know, time blocking is one of the best methods to be more productive, and accomplish your goals.

  • De-clutter

The less clutter you surround yourself with, the more clarity you will have in your life.

Understandably, you don’t have time to keep things sorted during the weekdays because you already have too much on your plate. So, why not make it a habit to clear all this during the weekends?

From cleaning your work desks and getting rid of the unnecessary paperwork to organizing your documents, files and folders in your local drive. There’s a lot that might need your attention if you will look carefully. Doing this will also ensure that you have to focus less on distractions during the week.

Instead of focusing on distractions, you will be able to shift your mind to achieving the more important goals that you have set for yourself.

  • Spend Some ‘Me’ Time

Finding your ‘me’ time can sometimes be a lot to ask in your busy schedule. This is the reason that great leaders always leave it for weekends. Read about the likes of Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, and you will find that they all have a common habit of spending a part of their weekend doing household chores.

That’s one way to spend time doing something that’ll light you up. You will be the best judge of what your ‘me’ time should be like.

Plan and start practicing this habit on weekends to make sure that you have a fresh mind when you go to the office to achieve your goals on Monday.

  • Have Fun

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.

I’m sure you are well-versed with this proverb. But how many of you actually practice it in your life? Staying over-indulged in work often leads to burnouts.

One of the habits that we all must develop is to spend some time on weekends to do any fun activity. It could be a sport that you like to play, pursuing a hobby from the past, or even developing a new hobby.

This small act will help you break the monotony and engage your mind into doing something that gives your joy. The serotonin boost that your mind will receive as a result of this will alleviate your mood, and lessen your stress levels. In short, you will be able to focus on your work more.

  • Prepare For The Coming Week

The last habit on this list is probably the most important one, and yet the easiest one to practice. Starting your week without preparation is like going to the battleground without an attack strategy. You are bound to fail.

You have to spend only 15 minutes or so to prepare your schedule, see if there’s an important meeting lined up for the coming week, and so on. It won’t take a lot, but the results it will yield will simply change your life.

As Benjamin Franklin used to say, “if you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.

Instead of facing failure, it is always a good idea to develop this habit of planning your week during the weekend and stay focused on your goals.

On A Concluding Note

If you look at the life stories of successful people, you will notice a pattern. The pattern is that they all are really good at building habits to keep their mind focused more on success, and less on other unimportant things in their life.

As already discussed at the beginning of this post, habits are vital for success. If you have already set a goal in your mind, then building habits that will help you achieve that goal has to be the first step you need to take.

So, what’s stopping you from doing it?
