Inspired by grocery stores, which stock only as much product as people need, Toyota’s manufacturing teams began using cards, or kanbans, to signal to other parts of the production line that they needed more parts. Instead of using timeboxes to govern their work, as a Scrum team does, a Kanban team uses WIP limits.
