But often, the real issue is that they’re missing a key ingredient: leadership. Working this way reduces the risk that you’re building the wrong software. Sprints are so essential to Agile that the 2020 Scrum Guide even includes them as an Agile ceremony. Agile ceremonies get abandoned when teams stop seeing the value in them.

I think of the Sprint as the heartbeat of Scrum because it sets the cadence and frequency for the other events. In high-risk environments (say with unknown technology needs or rapidly changing customer requirements) it’s better to select a shorter Sprint. Planning for longer than one month takes more time and comes with more risk. .

If a Sprint is too long, the market may invalidate a Sprint Goal, increasing complexity and risk. Shorter Sprints, similar to short projects, promote more learning cycles and limit the risk of cost and effort to a briefer time frame. Source : Scrum Guide 2020.
